Firms and Intellectual Property Rights: who, which, when and where
Firms file Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) to protect innovation and other intangible assets. Relying on various data sources this doctoral thesis investigates how firms employ different IPRs for innovation and growth purposes. There is a large heterogeneity among firms in the use of IPRs. IPR filing strongly depends on both sector and firm size. A taxonomy of Dutch firms filing IPRs revealed the five most common filing practices across firms.
IPR filings can also be used as an indicator for innovation and the capabilities which drive innovation and growth through the successful realization of new economic opportunities. Trademarks are generally associated with downstream activities of the innovation process, such as the market introduction and successful commercialization of products and services, and the capabilities needed for these activities. This thesis presents evidence that trademarks can also refer to early stage innovation as well.
An analysis of the IPR flings of scale-ups, firms which manage to achieve an annual growth rate of at least 20% over a period of at least three years, indicated that commercialization capabilities contribute more to the growth of these firms than technological capabilities. This also applies at regional level. An analysis of the IPR filings within Dutch regions suggested that the availability of technological and especially commercialization capabilities is necessary for exploiting the spillovers from unrelated activities which may lead to new business opportunities and contribute to regional economic resilience during an economic crisis.
About the author
Marcel Seip works as a senior advisor at the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. He studied Physics and Astronomy at the University of Groningen. After completing his studies, he was employed by Stichting FOM (Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter) and by Statistics Netherlands. In 2007 he joined the Netherlands Patent Office and in 2015 the corporate staff department of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
