M&O Research Seminar Andrew Sturdy

Prof. Andrew Sturdy (University of Bristol, UK)

Amsterdam Business Research Institute

Business and Organisation

Prof. Andrew Sturdy (University of Bristol, UK), will join M&O as a visiting professor this year. His first visit will take place on February 14-16 and he plans a number of relatively short visits throughout the year, in May, September and December for example.

We would hereby like to invite you to a lunch seminar organised to welcome him to the department on Thursday 15th February from 12:00 to 13:30 in the pantry on the 4th floor. In this seminar, Prof. Andrew Sturdy will introduce himself, his past research, as well as his current and future projects and share some of his experience with us in an informal and interactive session. This is an opportunity to help shape how he might contribute to M&O rather than presenting a formal paper which he will do at a later stage. Lunch will be provided!

Please send an email to Stefan Heusinkveld (s.heusinkveld@vu.nl) before February 6th if you would like to attend.

Prof. Andrew Sturdy will also have time for some individual appointments, in the morning of February 15th especially. If you are interested, please get in touch with Stefan Heusinkveld by email as well.

Prof. Andrew Sturdy is Professor of Management and Organization at the University of Bristol (UK). He has held academic posts in various institutions including at the University of Bath, the University of Melbourne, Australia and Imperial College London. In 2004, he became a professor of organisational behaviour at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, where he was subsequently appointed Associate Dean.

His research interests focus mainly on issues of power and identity in the production and use of management ideas, especially in relation to management consultancy and organisational change. He has published widely on these topics in high ranking academic journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Behaviour and Organization Studies, and led two ESRC-funded (UK government research council) research projects on management consultancy. His work was also published by leading publishers such as Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. Prof. Sturdy is a member of several editorial boards, and has extensive experience in editing journal special issues. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Management Inquiry

As a visiting professor, Andrew Sturdy will be working with PhD students and faculty at the Department of Management & Organisation as well as being involved in some Masters teaching (on consulting for example). He will also perform activities related to the ongoing research around a special issue in the Journal of Professions and Organization, editing an Oxford University Press Handbook  on management ideas and organising a sub-theme (Standing Working Group) to the EGOS conference. He is especially interested in developing joint projects and partnerships with government and/or healthcare on the use of management consultancy and on its international variation.
