The following criteria determine a researcher’s inclusion in ABRI-RI (any researcher is eligible for any type of fellowship as soon as she/he qualifies):

- Employed by SBE >= 0.2 fte
- Active researcher within scope of ABRI
- During the transition period (now – December 31, 2015): Scores >= 1.85 points according to SBE research allocation system
After the transition period (As of January 1, 2016): Scores >= 2.00 points according to SBE research allocation system - Fellowship is awarded for a period of 3 years (with limitless possibility of renewal for 3 year periods when qualified)*

- PhD
- Employed by SBE >= 0.2 fte
- Active researcher within scope of ABRI
- Scores >= 1.50 points according to SBE research allocation system
- Associate fellowship is awarded for a period of 2 years after which it is assessed whether the researcher qualifies as fellow; if not, a one-time extension of 2 years as associate fellow is possible when the researcher qualifies as such*
candidatefellowCandidate Fellow
- PhD obtained less than 6 years ago
- Employed by SBE >= 0.2 fte
- Active researcher within scope of ABRI
- Tenure track position
- Candidate fellowship is awarded for 3 years*; no renewal
visitingfellowVisiting Fellow
- PhD
- Visiting researcher at SBE for at least 2 weeks per year
- Highly qualified and respected researchers
- Active researcher within scope of ABRI
- Scores >= 1.85 points according to SBE research allocation system
- Affiliate fellowship is awarded for the years in which the researcher is considered a visiting scholar at SBE with a maximum of 3 years after which eligibility as affiliate fellow is re-assessed. When eligible, extensions of maximum 3-year periods [depending on duration of visit] are possible
* In the event of pregnancy, illness, or other special circumstances (to be approved by ABRI Board), the researcher will be allowed an additional year before (re-)evaluation of (associate) fellowship.
